If last night’s CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) movie night was any indication, Calgarians are ready to actively participate in the local food movement. It was standing room only for the free screening of The Real Dirt on Farmer John. (Un)intentionally, lo-fi was the theme of the night, as the machines would not cooperate to allow us to see the entire film. Fortunately, the over 100 people in attendance were ready for the main attraction anyhow, and our farmers did not disappoint. Inspired words, ruminations on how old is new, and the wisdom of age-old practices (decidedly low tech) – the simple power of gathering farmers together with consumers, and actually talking, is amazing.
Heartfelt thanks to our participants: Kris of Blue Mountain Bio Dynamic Farms, John from Eagle Creek Farms, Robbie from Oxyoke Farms, and Jon from Thompson Small Farm. Thank you for attending, for your honest and wise words, and staying so late, before having to drive back out of town. Special thanks to Michael with Ground Effect Cafe for the delicious muffins and making special efforts to attend, and Sunnyside Natural Market for the cool beverages in our very warm room.
If you are interested in future events, screenings, talks, workshops, etc. – do let us know as we would be keen to continue the dialogue that was begun last night.
