If you all haven’t already heard, a new farmer’s market will hopefully be opening in South Calgary this summer – the Kingsland Market! I have to admit, I was completely surprised to hear about this. I mean, I knew there was talk that a number of vendors would not be moving with the Calgary Farmer’s Market to their new location, but I thought I would have heard a tiny buzz before it came out. At any rate, I think it’s great that local farmers are taking things into their own hands, and clearly we embrace their vision of creating a sustainable local food network. I love that Calgary will have such a wide variety of Farmers’ Markets in all different corners of the city, from our walkable inner-city community, to the surburbs, on different days, so that we could pretty much shop anytime we want to at these fabulous markets.
It can only encourage both new vendors to develop new potential markets, as well as customers, who will now have much more accessible options to shop locally than ever before.
